Following a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday, Sports pundit Michael Owen claimed that Arsenal are „one of, if not Man City’s biggest challenge in this competition“ and are among the „two or three strongest“ sides in the tournament.
Owen praised Arsenal’s ability but cautioned that their lack of experience could be a hindrance in their quest to lift the trophy for the first time.
„I think this Arsenal team, on ability and on what they do week to week, are one of, if not Manchester City’s biggest challenge in this competition,“ Owen said. „I think they’re that good.
„But the problem is, and as Man City have shown, the very good teams in a league, if it’s your first time in the competition, it can take you a long time to understand it and to get past the experienced teams.
„I think that’s what Arsenal might find this season. As I say, on ability, I think they’re the second or third best team in it. Can I see them going all the way based on this inexperience? Possibly, it’s their first season, it’s a massive ask. But they’re good enough, ability-wise.“
Former Gunner Martin Keown was more reserved in his assessment of Arsenal’s chances of winning the Champions League, but he was pleased with the way they performed against Sevilla.
„When you come into this tournament, it is experience [that you need],“ Keown said. „This group is growing, being nurtured by the manager, and it’s step by step.
„I think their understanding from the last away game, they were massively better here. All the early battles, the early challenges. They were really up for it at the start which really pleased me.
„They lost control of the game, but they hung in there and got a result.“
Arsenal will be looking to secure their place in the last 16 of the Champions League when they host Sevilla at the Emirates Stadium in their next match.
