Marshall Dominates No. 3-Ranked Fairmont Football in a Stunning 37-13 Victory

MARSHALL — „Marshall displayed remarkable physicality and controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the game. When you achieve that on both sides of the football, you’re bound to win many games,“ stated Fairmont head coach Mat Mahoney following the Class AAA No. 3-ranked and previously undefeated Cardinals‘ shocking 37-13 defeat to Terry Bahlmann’s Tigers in the South Central Red District matchup on Friday night.

Cornerback Dylan Haney asserted his dominance in the defensive secondary for Marshall, while teammate Ashton Blomberg commanded the offensive airspace from his split end position. Fullback Gavin Schaefer controlled the ground game at Mattke Field, ultimately propelling the Tigers to a surprising 24-point Homecoming victory on the Southwest Minnesota State University campus.

Schaefer, using his imposing 6-foot-2, 230-pound frame, churned out an impressive 176 yards on 17 carries for Marshall. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Blomberg made a statement with six receptions for a staggering 161 yards, catching every pass thrown his way by quarterback Josh Kraft.

Interestingly, Blomberg didn’t find the end zone himself but was instrumental in setting up two rushing touchdowns each by Schaefer and halfback Mason Eickhoff, along with one more by Kraft.

On the defensive front, Haney secured three of the Tigers‘ four interceptions, effectively preventing the Cardinals from reaching the end zone for most of the game. Eickhoff also contributed with an interception.

Coach Mahoney remarked, „It’s a wake-up call for us, but we’ll make the necessary adjustments for the final two regular-season games and the upcoming sectional playoffs.“

Strikingly, the district showdown initially appeared to be an offensive shootout, as both the Tigers and Cardinals converted their opening possessions into points.

Schaefer and Eickhoff ignited a potent ground-and-pound offense that covered 64 yards in eight plays, giving Marshall an early 6-0 lead.

Fairmont’s Elijah Johnson, however, showcased his speed and strength by returning Marshall’s kickoff for 81 yards, positioning the Cardinals at the Tigers‘ 7-yard line. Despite a holding penalty on the Cardinals, Nolan Schultze later hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blaze Geiger. Kellen Stenzel’s PAT kick put Fairmont ahead 7-6 at the 7:05 mark of the first quarter before Marshall went on to score 31 unanswered points, sealing the game’s outcome.

Marshall’s defensive line, consisting of Jacob Panoo, JR Vierstraete, and Schaefer, limited the Cardinals‘ potent rushing attack to just 68 yards on 20 carries and forced back-to-back punts. Haney’s back-to-back interceptions in the second quarter further solidified Marshall’s control of the game.

Schaefer scored from 2 yards out following a stout defensive stand by the Tigers and a five-play, 64-yard offensive drive, giving Marshall a 12-7 lead with only 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Haney’s first interception set up Kraft’s 1-yard plunge, following his 32-yard connection with Blomberg. Eickhoff capped the drive with a 2-point conversion, extending Marshall’s lead to 20-7 with 4:37 left in the second quarter.

Haney and Fairmont defensive back Taylor Austin then exchanged interceptions on consecutive plays, but the Kraft-to-Blomberg connection set the stage for Eickhoff’s 2-yard touchdown run. Kraft connected with Blomberg on passes of 32 and 20 yards, and Ethan Hess‘ PAT kick widened the Tigers‘ lead to 27-7 with 14 seconds remaining before halftime.

Eickhoff and Haney continued to make interceptions for Marshall during a scoreless third quarter, with Hess later kicking a 25-yard field goal to begin the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, Schaefer added an 11-yard bruising touchdown run for Marshall, while Levi Pooley caught a 25-yard scoring pass from Geiger to conclude Fairmont’s scoring. Pooley was the game’s top receiver with eight catches for 118 yards, and Geiger threw for a game-high 187 yards and two touchdowns but also threw four interceptions.

Elijah Johnson led the Cardinals‘ ground game with 50 yards on 13 carries.

Kraft completed 7 of 15 passes for 164 yards, complementing the Tigers‘ 288 rushing yards and resulting in a total yards advantage of 452-255 over the Cardinals for the night.

Fairmont (5-1) will host Worthington next Friday night at 7 p.m. at Thomas Mahoney Field, while Marshall (4-2) will travel to St. Peter for a game on Floyd B. Johnson Field next Friday night.
